Question

An ionic compound of element X and chlorine has the formula XCl3.The molecular mass of XCl3 is 118.5.What is the molecular mass of oxide of X?

Open in App
Solution

XCl3 mass is 118.5
XCl3 mass is mass of X + 3* mass of Cl
therefore
118.5= mass X + 3*35.5 ( mass of chlorine is 35.5 )
therefore mass of X is 12 u.
also valency of X is 3 ( By XCl3 formula )
therefore , formula for oxide of X is
X2O3

Mass of X2O3 = 2*12 + 3* 16= 72
