Question

An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a concave mirror of focal length 20 cm. (a) Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image. (b) Calculate the image distance. (c) State two characteristics of the image formed.

Solution

the mirror formula is given as

1/f = 1/v + 1/u

here

f = focal length = -20cm

v = image distance

object distance = -10cm

so,

1/v = 1/f - 1/u = -1/20 + 1/10

or

1/v = (-1+2)/20

thus, the image distance will be

v = 20cm

have a look at the ray diagram below

so, the image formed is erect, magnified and virtual.
