Question

An object of mass 100 kg is accelerated uniformly from a velocity of 5m/s to 8 m/s in 6 s. Calculate the force acting on it.

Open in App
Solution

1. Given data:

  1. Mass of the object is m=100kg
  2. Initial velocity is u=5m/s
  3. Final velocity is v=8m/s
  4. Time taken is t=6s.

2. Calculation of Force

  1. Force can be calculated by using Newton's second law of motion.
  2. Force is defined as the rate of change of momentum of a body.
  3. Momentum can be calculated by using formula, p=mv.
  4. Force=ChangeinmomentumTimetaken=pf-pit, where pf and pi are the final and initial momentum of the object respectively.
  5. Force=mv-mut=m(v-u)t
  6. F=100(8-5)6=100×36=50N

Hence, the force will be 50N.
