Question

Ball bearings leave the horizontal trough with a velocity of magnitude u and fall through the 70 mm diameter hole as shown. Calculate the permissible range of u which will enable the balls to enter the hole. Take the dotted positions to represent the limiting conditions. (Take g=10 m/s2 and 10=3.2)

Solution

The correct option is B u=0.76 m/s to 1.16 m/s

Horizontal distance travelled by the ball in time t,
s=ut(1)
Vertical distance travelled by the ball in time t,
h=12gt2t=2hg(2)
Substituting (2) in (1), u=s2hg
To fall through the hole, the centre of the ball bearing must be within the range of C and D with limited trajectories between BC and BD.

For path BC, SBC=(120702)+202=95 mm

umin=uBC=95×1032×80×10310
=95×10316×10210
=95×1030.4×3.2=0.76 ms1

For path BD, SBD=(120+D2)d2=(120+702)202=145 mm

umax=uBD=145×1032×80×10310
=145×1030.4×3.2=1.16 ms1
