(i) In simple cubic, Packing efficiency

= Volume of one atom×100Volume of unit cell

= 43πr38r3×100=π6×100%=52.4%


where, r = radius of one sphere or atom.

(ii) In body centred cubic, Packing efficiency

= Volume occupied by 2 atoms in the unit cell ×100Volume of the unit cell

= 2×(43)πr3×100[(43)r]3

= (83)πr3×10064(3×3)r3=68%

(iii) In face centred cubic, packing efficiency

= Volume occupied by 4 atoms in the unit cell×100Volume of the unit cell

= 4×(43)πr3×100(22r)3=(163)πr3×100162r3=74%
