Question

Calculate the molar mass of Acetic acid, CH3COOH

Given the atomic masses of C = 12u, H = 1u, O = 16u

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Calculating the molar mass

Molar mass is equal to the sum of atomic masses of the individual atoms present in one molecule of a substance.

Step 2: Given data

Atomic masses: C = 12u, H = 1u, O = 16u

Step 3: Finding the molar mass for the given data

The molar mass of CH3COOH = (Number of carbon atoms x atomic mass of carbon) + (Number of hydrogen atoms x atomic mass of hydrogen) + (Number of oxygen atoms x atomic mass of oxygen)

The molar mass of CH3COOH = 1×12+3×1+1×12+2×16+1×1

The molar mass of CH3COOH = 12+3+12+32+1=60g/mol

Hence, the molar mass of Acetic acid CH3COOH is 60g/mol
