Question

Can you think of reasons why more complex organisms cannot give rise to new individuals through regeneration?

Solution

Regeneration in complex organisms:

  1. In a complex organism, tissues and specialized cells make up different organs and perform several functions in their body.
  2. So a simple regeneration cannot give rise to the complex organism due to its highly specialized features.
  3. The organs in a complex organism are organized at different levels. This organization cannot be attained through regeneration.
  4. The organs and organ systems in a complex organism are interconnected and well-coordinated to perform different vital functions.
  5. Therefore regeneration can give rise to smaller parts of the body of the complex organism like blood, skin muscles, etc. but not to a new individual.

Hence, a complex multicellular organism cannot reproduce through regeneration.
