Question

Colourless compound X obtained from sea water used in daily meals is taken in a test tube. Concentrated H2SO4 was added to the test tube. A pungent smelling gas Y comes out which does not affect dry blue litmus paper but turns moist blue litmus paper red. Identify X and Y. Write the chemical reactions involved.

The colourless compound X is NaCl which is obtained from sea water and we use it in our daily meal. NaCl on reaction with H2SO4 releases HCl gas which turns moist blue litmus paper red because HCl is acidic in nature reaction can be given as follows:
NaCl(s)+H2SO4(l)HCl(g)+NaHSO4(s)
