Adrenal glands

  1. The adrenal glands are present above the kidneys. They are divided into the outer yellowish adrenal cortex and inner reddish renal medulla.
  2. The adrenal cortex secretes steroid hormones called corticosteroids. They are of three types- mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, and gonadocorticoids.
  3. Mineralocorticoids help in the regulation of water and electrolyte balance in the body. Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid.
  4. Glucocorticoids have an antagonistic action compared to insulin. They help in the regulation of the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
  5. Gonadocorticoids influence the development of sexual characters. Androgen in males and estrogen in females are examples of gonadocorticoids.
