Question

Do genes evolve?

Open in App
Solution

Genes:

  1. They are the small units or part of a molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) present within the genome, which code for proteins.
  2. The prime function of a gene is to store information, which is needed to construct particular proteins required in an organism.
  3. They are also accountable for individual features like the color of the skin, eyes, hair, etc.
  4. The majority of the genes are formed from DNA, which is transferred from the parents to the offspring.
  5. The history of life on Earth has been signified by the evolution of novel genes.
  6. Humans possess more genes with distinct functions than any other living species.
  7. The genes, which have originated newly in the relevant evolutionary timescale are known as the new gene.
  8. These novel genes generate by the two fundamental mechanisms, that is, gene duplication and de novo genes.
  9. A mechanism, via which new genetic material is produced at the time of molecular evolution is termed gene duplication.
  10. The process by which the evolution of new genes takes place from the sequences of DNA, which were ancestrally non-genic is termed de novo gene birth.
