Question

Explain, giving one simple example for the following chemical change :

Electrolytic dissociation

Open in App
Solution

  • An electrolytic dissociation reaction is a type of decomposition reaction assisted by an electric current.
  • Decomposition reaction- A decomposition reaction can be defined as a chemical reaction in which one reactant breaks down into two or more products.
  • Hence, we can define thermal dissociation reaction as an electrolytic decomposition reaction is a type of decomposition reaction in which the activation energy for decomposition is provided in the form of electrical energy.

An example of an electrolytic decomposition reaction is the electrolysis of water.

2H2O(l)Waterā†’2H2(g)Hydrogen+O2(g)Oxygen

In the above equation, the reaction is assisted by an electric current, and water is dissociated into Hydrogen and Oxygen.
