The production of growth hormone is stimulated by SRH (Somatotropin releasing hormone) or GH-RH (Growth hormone releasing hormone) from the hypothalamus. It is responsible for stimulating the growth of the entire body. (0.5 marks)
At a younger age, deficiency of this hormone results in dwarfism characterised by stunting of growth. Excess of growth hormone in children causes gigantism. It leads to excessive linear growth, causing the individual to be very tall.
Excess of growth hormone in adults is known as acromegaly. (1.5 marks)
