Explain the term scurvy.

Scurvy:

  1. Scurvy is a disease caused due to deficiency of vitamin C(ascorbic acid) in food.
  2. Some of the food sources of vitamin C are lemon, orange, guava, cabbage etc.
  3. Vitamins are necessary nutrients that are mostly found in green plants. For proper growth and good health, a normal body needs some vitamins per day as vitamins protect the body from various types of diseases.
  4. Food contains various types of nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals and if the food does not contain enough amount of vitamins, certain deficiency disease occurs such as scurvy, rickets and night blindness.
  5. Vitamins are of two types- water-soluble( vitamin B and vitamin C) and fat-soluble vitamins( vitamin D, E, K, and A).
  6. Symptoms of scurvy include bleeding gums and pain in joints.
