Question

Generally solubility of gases in liquids is decreases as increasing temperature. Give reason.

Open in App
Solution

  • Increased temperature causes an increase in kinetic energy. The higher kinetic energy causes more motion in the gas molecules which break intermolecular bonds and escape from solution.
  • Also it can be explained by Le Chatelier's principle, dissolution of gas in the liquid is an exothermic process with increase in temperature solubility decreases.
  • Hence as the temperature increases, the solubility of a gas decreases
