Question

Give one example of a hydroxide which is insoluble in water.

Open in App
Solution

1. Hydroxide

Hydroxides are basic compounds that are either soluble or insoluble in water. The molecular formula of hydroxides contains the oxygen and hydrogen atoms bonded together by a single bond. The dissociation of hydroxide compounds yields a negatively charged ion containing hydrogen and oxygen. So it can also act as a nucleophile.

2. Example of hydroxides

There are a number of hydroxides. The important hydroxides are Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and Potassium hydroxide (KOH). They are highly soluble in water.

Thus, an example of a hydroxide that is insoluble in water is Magnesium hydroxide MgOH2. This is because of the strong bond existing between Magnesium and Hydroxyl ions.
