Dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium liberating hydrogen, but the same is not liberated when the acid reacts with lead.

Solution

Lead reacts slowly with hydrochloric acid to release hydrogen but the reaction eventually stops. Lead chloride formed is insoluble and coats the metal and forms a barrier that does not allow the acid to come in contact with the metal.
