Open in App
Solution

Down syndrome:

  1. Down syndrome is defined as a chromosomal disorder in which an error in cell division results in an extra copy of chromosomes in the body.
  2. This extra chromosome 21 tends to impair affected individuals' physical and cognitive abilities.

Tests for down syndrome:

The three primary diagnostic procedures are amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and ultrasound.

  1. Most chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome, can be detected with high accuracy using amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling.
  2. The primary goal of ultrasound is to determine the status of a pregnancy, including the due date, fetal size, and whether or not the mother is carrying multiples. Ultrasound can also provide information about potential birth defects in a fetus.
