Question

How do you test for Alkanes?

Open in App
Solution

The test for an alkane is summarized as follows:

  1. Alkanes are the hydrocarbon that contain C-C bond which is more stable than normal alkene C=C and alkyne CC bond.
  2. This is the reason alkanes are very unreactive towards any other reagent.
  3. When Bromine water is added to alkanes and alkenes separately, the alkene reacts and decolorises bromine water, but with alkanes no reaction takes place and cannot decolorise bromine water.
