Question

How does the nature of oxides vary on moving down a group and across a period?

Open in App
Solution

  • On moving across a period in the periodic table, the basic nature of oxides decreases due to which their acidic nature increases.
  • On moving down the group (up to down), the electropositive property of the central atom of an oxide determines about the acidic and basic in general. The oxide becomes more basic as the central atom becomes more electropositive, while the oxide becomes more acidic as the central atom becomes more electronegative.
