How is the spinal cord protected in the human body?

Spinal cord:

1. Chordates are distinguished by their spinal cord.
2. It is a long, thin, tubular structure made up of nerve tissue.
3. In humans, the spinal cord extends from the medulla oblongata of the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column.
4. In humans, the central nervous system (CNS) is comprised of the brain and spinal cord.
5. Meninges, bones, discs, ligaments, and muscles protect the spinal cord.

Protection of Spinal cord:

• Bone

1. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column.

• Meninges

1. Three thin layers called meninges cover the cord.
2. The outermost layer is the dura mater, the middle layer has a spiderweb-like appearance, and the innermost layer is the pia mater.

• Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

1. It is a fluid that travels between the brain and the spinal cord.
2. CSF is also found in the subarachnoid space, which exists between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater.
