Question

How transformants are selected?

Open in App
Solution

Selection of transformants:

  1. In biology, transformation is one of numerous mechanisms used to transfer genetic material between microbial cells in the form of "naked" deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
  2. One of the crucial pillars of molecular genetics is its discovery and clarification.
  3. Transformants are distinguished from non-transformants by the presence of a selectable marker, such as the antibiotic resistance gene included in the plasmid.
  4. Transformants can be selected by growing them on the antibiotic-containing media.
  5. Cells that have transformed to include foreign DNA are known as transformants, whereas cells that have not transformed are known as non-transformants.
