Question

How will you convert ethanoic acid to methane? Give chemical equations for the reactions involved.

Open in App
Solution

  • Ethanoic acid has the chemical formula CH3COOH. We cannot make methane directly from Ethanoic acid.
  • We must first convert ethanoic acid to sodium (Na) salt, after which we can produce methane (CH4) from it.
  • To begin, Acetic acid combines with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to produce Sodium acetate (CH3COONa) and water (H2O).

CH3COOH(aq)Ethanoicacid+NaOH(s)SodiumhydroxideCH3COONa(s)Sodiumacetate+H2O(l)Water

  • On distillation, the formed Sodium acetate combines with sodium hydroxide to produce Methane, and the chemical process is as follows.

CH3COONa(s)Sodiumacetate+NaOH(s)SodiumhydroxideCH4(g)Methane+Na2CO3(s)Soidumcarbonate
