Each friend of mine gets 5 toffees.
Since I have four friends, the number of toffees that my friends get in total is 5×4=20.

Total number of toffees I initially had
= Number of toffees given to the
friends + Number of toffees
= 20 + 3
= 23

Thus, I had 23 toffees in the beginning.
