Question

What are the factors affecting genetic equilibrium?

Open in App
Solution

Genetic equilibrium:

  1. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, also known as genetic equilibrium, describes the situation of an allele or genotype in a gene pool such as a population where the frequency does not fluctuate from generation to generation.
  2. If there is no population evolution, then genetic equilibrium exists.
  3. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is influenced by any factor that disturbs the alleles in a population.
  4. Mutations, recombinations during sexual reproduction, genetic drift, gene migration or gene flow, and natural selection are the major factors that influence genetic equilibrium and cause variety in the population.
  5. Different Hardy-Weinberg assumptions are broken in accordance with the mechanisms of evolution.
