By quadratic formula, the roots of this equation are:
α,β=λ2±44λ+λ240+4λ2=λ2±λ2362.
The magnitude of the difference of the roots is clearly |λ236|
We have, α3+β3=(λ2)34+3(λ2)(λ236)4=(λ2)(4λ24λ104)4=(λ2)(λ2λ26).
This function attains its minimum value at λ=4.
