Question

If you apply 1 J of energy to lift a book of 0.5 kg, how high will it rise?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data

Potential energy is, PE= 1 J

Mass of the book is, m=0.5 kg

Step 2: Calculating height.

The energy possessed by a body due to its height is termed its potential energy. It is given as,

PE=mgh

where, m is mass, g is acceleration due to gravity and h is height.

Assume g=10 m/s2.

Substituting the known values in the equation for potential energy, we get,

1 J=0.5 kg×10 m/s2×hh=10.5×10h=15h=0.2 m

Therefore, the book will rise to a height of 0.2 m.
