The pollen tube usually enters the ovule through the micropyle. After entering the ovule, the filiform apparatus of the synergid guides the pollen tube into one of the synergids. After entering one of the synergids through the filiform apparatus, the contents of the pollen tube are discharged into the synergid.

The two male gametes present in the pollen tube are discharged through a pore into the cytoplasm of synergids.

One male gamete moves towards the egg cell and fuses with its nucleus and it results in the formation of diploid zygote.

Another male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei present in the central cell and this results in the formation of triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN).

Antipodal cells are present at the chalazal end and degenerate after fertilisation.
