Conversion from ethanol to ethene:

  • On heating at 170°C in the presence of an excess of concentrated sulphuric acid(H2SO4), ethanol(CH3-CH2-OH) gets dehydrated to give ethene(CH2=CH2).
  • The reaction of dehydration can be given as:

CH3CH2OH EthanolConc.H2SO4 CH2=CH2Ethene+H2OWater

  • During the conversion process of ethanol into ethene in the presence of conc. sulphuric acid, a molecule of water is lost.
  • In this reaction, concentrated sulphuric acid(H2SO4) acts as a dehydrating agent.

Thus, in the conversion from ethanol to ethene, concentrated sulphuric acid is used as a dehydrating agent.
