Question

In what volume ratio NH4Cl and NH4OH having 1M concentration should be mixed to get a buffer solution of pH=9.26 (pKb of NH4OH = 4.74?

Solution

pOH = pKb+ log ([salt]/ [base]) byHenderson-Hasselbalch Equation pOH = 14- pH = 14 - 9.26 = 4.74 hence 4.74 = 4.74 + log ([salt]/ [base]) therefore log ([salt]/ [base]) = 0 so [salt]/ [base] = 1 since they have concentrationas 1M so the volume ratio is 1:1.
