Is this statement correct- diploid sex cell divides to form 4 haploid sex cells. both the diploid and haploid were sex/germ cells but only the haploid cells are either sperm or egg.

The statement is wrong.

Gametes are an organism's reproductive cells. They are also referred to as sex cells. Female gametes are called ova or egg cells, and male gametes are called sperm. Gametes are haploid cells, and each cell carries only one copy of each chromosome.

So only the haploid cells resulting from meiosis can be called sex cells in this case.
