Disadvantages of a genetically modified organism:

• The transgene product may cause toxicities or allergies.
• It may cause harm to other organisms e.g. pollen from Bt corn caused high mortality in monarch butterfly.
• If the gene is transferred to non-target weed, they may become superweeds.
• It can disturb the genetic setup of organisms and cause genetic pollution.
• The bacteria present in the gut of humans may take up antibiotic resistance gene present in GM food and can become resistant.
