Reflection

  1. Reflection is a phenomenon of light in which when a light ray hits a surface it deflects its direction and propagates back in a different path.
  2. The first law of reflection is that the incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal of the reflection all lie on the same plane.
  3. The second law of reflection is that the angle of the incidence is equal to the angle of the reflection.

Image

  1. The image formed by a mirror or a lens is of two types.
  2. Real image: The image that is formed due to the actual convergence of the reflected or refracted rays is called a real image. Hence, this image can be obtained on a screen.
  3. Virtual Image: The image that is formed by the tracing back of the converged ray and the traced rays are found to diverge at a point. Hence, this image cannot be obtained on a screen.
  4. For a reflection through a plane mirror, the image formed is virtual.
  5. Hence, the child's image in the given figure is a virtual image and it cannot be obtained on a screen.
