Question

Martha was supposed to multiply the number of cans sold with the price of one can to ascertain the amount. Instead of taking 41 as the number of cans, she wrote 14 by mistake. As a result, the product went down by 135. What is the other multiplier?

Solution

Compute the other multiplier:

She has to multiply the number of cans with the prize. But she mistakenly multiplies the prize by 14 instead of 41 and that reduced the value of a product by 135. The value of a product when multiplied by 41 is 135 more than the value of a product when multiplied by 14.

Let the multiplier be x.

41x=14x+13541x-14x=13527x=135x=13527x=5

Hence the multiplier is 5.
