Briefly discuss the role of the Drafting Committee in the making of the Indian Constitution.

  • The Drafting Committee was appointed on 29th August 1947 with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as its chairman.
  • It had 6 other members- A.K Ayyar, N. Gopalaswami, K.M. Munshi, Mohammad Saadulla, B.L. Mitter and D.P Khaitan.
  • Its role was to analyse the Draft Constitution prepared by the Constitutional Advisor B.N. Rao and make the necessary changes to it.
  • The Committee led by Dr. Ambedkar presented a detailed draft constitution which was published for public discussion.
  • The majority of the debates of the Constituent Assembly happened around the Draft Constitution made by the committee.
  • The draft constitution was discussed and the proposed amendments were accepted and enacted.
