Question

Name of the gas/gases evolved when crystals of ferrous sulfate are heated strongly?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When crystals of ferrous sulphate are heated then they lose water of crystallization.
  2. FeSO4.7H2O(s)FeSO4(s)+7H2O(g)

If we heat crystals further then FeSO4 releases sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sulphur trioxide (SO3) gases and gets converted into ferric oxide (Fe2O3).

Reaction Involved:

2FeSO4(s)Fe2O3(s)+SO2(g)+SO3(g)

Hence, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sulphur trioxide (SO3) gases are evolved when crystals of ferrous sulfate are heated strongly.
