Meninges:

1. Three layers of connective tissue enclose the brain and the spinal cord which are called meninges.
2. The three layers are named as Dura mater, Arachnoid mater, and Pia mater.
3. The dura mater is the outermost layer and the pia mater is the innermost layer.
4. The arachnoid mater is found in between the dura and pia mater.
5. The space between the arachnoid and the pia mater is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
6. The meninges protects the central nervous system by acting as a shock absorber and insulating the brain and the spinal cord from mechanical injury.
