Question

Name the metal used by Rutherford in making thin foils.

Solution

Rutherford's atomic model:

  1. To design the structure of atom, Rutherford performed an experiment.
  2. In the experiment, Rutherford bombarded thin gold foil having thickness 100nm or 10-5cm with alpha particles in an evacuated chamber.
  3. He placed a circular fluorescent screen coated with zinc sulphide around the gold foil.
  4. The alpha particles were made to pass through through a slit in lead plate.
  5. When the alpha particles struck the zinc sulphide screen, a tiny flash of light was produced at that point.
  6. Based on this experiment, Rutherford explained the structure of an atom.

Thus, the metal used by Rutherford in making thin foils is gold.
