Solution

A reaction in which one of the reacting species loses electrons while the other gains electrons are known as a reduction-oxidation reaction.

For example, H_{2} + F_{2} \rightarrow 2HF

Oxidation: H_{2} \rightarrow 2H^{+} + 2e^{-}

Reduction : F_{2} + 2e^{-} \rightarrow 2F^{-}

Net reaction : H_{2} + F_{2} \rightarrow 2H^{+} + 2F^{-} \rightarrow 2HF
