Question

Name two characteristics of the chemical reaction involving solutions of lead nitrate and potassium iodide.

Open in App
Solution

  1. When Lead nitrate(Pb(NO3)2) reacts with Potassium iodide(KI), it gives lead iodide(PbI2) and potassium nitrate(KNO3) as the product.
  2. Here, Lead iodide is the precipitate.
  3. The reaction of Lead nitrate and Potassium iodide can be written as follows:

Pb(NO3)2(aq)+2KI(aq)PbI2+2KNO3(aq)(Leadnitrate)(Potassiumiodide)(Leadiodide)(Potassiumnitrate)

Characteristics:

  1. A color change can be observed, where the Lead nitrate is white while the Lead iodide is yellow.
  2. A precipitate is formed as a product. Lead iodide is a yellow-colored precipitate.
