Question

Oxidation Number Of Pb In PbSO4

Open in App
Solution

Explanation for Correct answer:-

Oxidation Number:

  • The total number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses in order to form a chemical bond with another atom is known as the Oxidation Number.
  • Generally, the Oxidation number is the charge present on the ions.

Let the oxidation state of Pb in PbSO4 be x.

Also, the oxidation state of Pb and O is +6 and -2 respectively.

So,

Oxidation state of Pb + Oxidation state of S + 4 x Oxidation State of O = 0 (As the charge on PbSO4 is 0)

x + (+6) + 4(-2) = 0

x = +2

Therefore, the oxidation state of Pb in PbSO4 is +2.
