Question

Oxidation State Of S In H2SO3 Is________.

Open in App
Solution

Oxidation Number:

  • The total number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses in order to form a chemical bond with another atom is known as the Oxidation Number.
  • Generally, the Oxidation number is the charge present on the ions.

Let the oxidation number of S be x.

Also. we know the oxidation state of, HandO are +1, and -2 respectively.

For H2SO3 ,

2 x Oxidation state of H + Oxidation state of S + 3 x Oxidation state of O = 0 ( As the charge on H2SO3 is 0)

2(+1) + x + 3(-2) = 0

x = +4

Therefore, the oxidation state of S in H2SO3 is +4.
