Question

ammonia contains 82.35% of nitrogen and 17.65% of hydrogen , water contains 88.90% of oxygen and 11.10% of Hydrogen. Nitrogen trioxide contains 63.15% of oxygen and 36.85% of nitrogen. Show that this data illustrate the law of Reciprocal proportion.

Solution

Note - 82.35% . Here % can be replaced by the gram i.e equivalent to 82.35 g same is the case with the rest given values.

Given-
17.65 g of H react with 82.35 g of N
1 g of H react with N=4.666

Similarly
11.10 g of H react with 88.90 g of O
1 g of H react with O= 8.009

Hence ratio of masses of N and O which combine with 1 g of H
=8.009 : 4.666
=1 : 0.58

N andd O combine with each other directly in the ratio
= 63.14 : 36.85
=1 : 0.58

Thus, this data illustrate the law of Reciprocal proportion
