WHAT IS AGAR AND DIATOM?
Agar or agar-agar is gelatinous polysaccharide produced by certain members of red algae such as Gracilaria and Gelidium. It is used as a solidifying agent in the preparation of growth media for growing various microorganisms and plants during tissue culture. In the food industry it is used in place of gelatin in the preparation of ice creams and jellies.
Diatoms are the microscopic unicellular, marine or freshwater colonial algae. The cell wall of diatoms is impregnated with the silica When they die, the silica accumulates at the bottom of the lakes and seas to form a siliceous earth called diatomaceous earth.
