Question

Pb4+ salts are better oxidizing agent agents, while Ge2+ salts are better reducing agents. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

By inert pair effect, the stability order is:
Pb4+<Pb2+
Ge4+>Ge2+.
Hence, Pb4++2ePb2+ and Ge2+Ge4++2e both are spontaneous towards more stable ions (ΔG<0). Pb4+ can be easily reduced to Pb2+ and thus is an oxidising agent. Ge2+ can be easily oxidised and thus is a reducing agent.
