The plasma membrane of cyanobacteria gives out extensions known as chromatophores. They contain various photosynthetic pigments necessary for performing photosynthesis. These pigments are chlorophyll a, carotenes, and xanthophylls.

A heterocyst is a differentiated cyanobacterial cell that carries out nitrogen fixation. The heterocysts function as the sites for nitrogen fixation under aerobic conditions. They are formed in response to a lack of fixed nitrogen.

Basal bodies are protein‐based structures located at the base of cilia which are thought to provide a platform on which the cilium is constructed. The basal body is a modified form of the centriole, an organelle that is found at the core of the mitotic spindle pole.
