The two versions of a trait are situated on copies of the same chromosome. Each parent contributes one copy of the gene for a particular character. In the gamete, however, only one copy is present. After fusion, the nucleus of cell contains two complete sets of chromosomes, one set inherited from each parent (diploid condition). Sex chromosomes carry genes for sexual characters.
