Question 65
Two ores A and B were taken. On heating, ore A gives CO2 whereas, ore B gives SO2. What steps will you take to convert them into metals ?

Solution

Since ore A gives CO2 and ore B gives SO2, ore A is a carbonate, MCO3, and ore B is a sulphide, MS.

Metal from ore A can be obtained by calcination, followed by reduction:
MCO3(s)Calcination−−−−−−MO(s)+CO2(g)
MO(s)+C(s)Reduction−−−−−M(s)+CO(g)

Metal from ore B can be obtained by roasting followed by reduction:
2MS(s)+3O2(g)Roasting−−−−2MO(s)+2SO2(g)
MO(s)+C(s)M(s)+CO(g)
