It is characterized by the presence of a large number of follicle cells and the primary oocyte, that divides to form the secondary oocyte in mature ovarian follicles. The Oogonia multiply by dividing mitotically; this proliferation ends when the oogonia enter meiosis. After beginning the meiotic process, the oogonia forms the primary oocyte and can no longer replicate. Of the several primary oocytes that complete meiosis I each month, only one or a few dominant follicles, completes maturation and undergoes ovulation. The other follicles that begin to mature will regress and become atretic follicles, eventually deteriorating. Therefore, both the primary oocyte and the follicle cells arisen from the oogonia.
