Solution

The correct option is C Assertion is true but reason is false

A variety that is propagated vegetatively from a single plant is called clone. In other words, the progeny of a single plant obtained by asexual reproduction is known as clone or all the vegetative progenies of a single plant are called a clone. A clone may be defined as a group of individuals of like genotypic composition traceable through asexual reproduction to a single ancestral zygote. Selection of desirable clones from the mixed population of vegetative propagated crops is known as clonal selection. Clonal selection is a method of improving vegetatively propagated crops like sugarcane, banana, potato, citrus, mango, etc. All the plants of a clone are similar, phenotypically and genotypically. Sugar cane is usually propagated through stem cuttings. Mint and Chrysanthemum bear suckers at the base of aerial shoots. After growing for some distance, the suckers grow out and produce new crowns. The suckers may form independent plants.
