Soak few seeds of black gram in water for few days. Take them out and gently split them into two halves. Observe the position of the baby plant.

Observations and results of experiment:

1. When a few seeds of a black gram are soaked in water for a few days, it is observed that a baby plant(sprouts) germinates from the black gram.
2. A germinating seed includes a baby plant or a fertilised ovule which is known as an embryo. The embryo has two parts:

• Plumule: Plumule is the part of the embryo that gives rise to the stem part of the plant.
• Radicle: The radicle is the part of the embryo that gives rise to the root part of the plant.

1. Seeds reserve food in fleshy portions which are known as cotyledons.
2. Seeds are classified into two types: Monocotyledon and Dicotyledon.
3. The plants that have only one cotyledon is known as monocotyledon whereas the plants that have two cotyledon is known as dicotyledon.
